Salt Kills Garage Door Cables From the Bottom Up

In snow country, garage door cables rust out at the bottom loop years before they wear out. Why the last two inches fail first, what rust looks like inside a cable, and the one check to do every May.

Garage door cables are rated for years of lifting. In a Marquette garage, most of them never get to die of old age - they rust out at the bottom first, killed by the same brine that eats rocker panels. Every evening from November to April, salt slush drips off the car and puddles at the threshold, and the cable’s bottom loop sits in that puddle a few inches off the slab. Steel wire, road salt, five months a year. The math isn’t close.

That’s worth knowing because rust failure is the preventable kind of cable failure. Wear takes cycles. Rust takes seasons, and it announces itself in a place you can check in under a minute.

The short version:

  • The bottom two inches fail first. The loop at the bottom bracket lives in salt water all winter while the rest of the cable stays dry and healthy.
  • Brown stains are the warning. Rust bleeding from between the strands means the corrosion is inside the cable, where the strength is.

Why the bottom loop, specifically?

Because that’s where the water is, and where the cable can’t shed it. The cable ends in a loop around a peg on the bottom bracket, strand wound against strand. Brine wicks into those gaps and stays - the loop can’t dry out the way the open cable run can, and every freeze-thaw cycle pulls more moisture in. Meanwhile the run from the bracket up to the drum above the door stays comparatively dry and can look showroom-new on the same door whose loops are half gone.

This is also why cable trouble here doesn’t track door usage. A lightly used door in Trowbridge Park rusts on the same schedule as a rental’s door that slams twenty times a day. Mileage barely matters. The puddle does the work.

What rust looks like from the outside

You can’t see inside a cable, but a corroding cable tells on itself three ways, in escalating order:

  1. Staining. Brown bleed on the strands at the loop, or a rust ring on the bracket below it. The corrosion is established and working inward.
  2. Stiffness and swell. A healthy cable end is flexible wire rope. A rusting one fuses into something closer to a rod, sometimes visibly fattened. Strength is already gone at this stage.
  3. Broken strands. Individual wires snapped at the loop, ends sticking out. The remaining strands are carrying a load they weren’t sized for, and the countdown is short.

Any of the three earns a replacement call. Two more things while you’re kneeling there with the flashlight: don’t test the cable by tugging it, and don’t touch the bottom bracket’s bolts - that hardware anchors full spring tension even with the door shut, and it is the one genuinely dangerous fastener on the whole door.

The May check

One habit covers this entire failure mode: when the salt season ends and the garage floor finally dries out, give each bottom loop one minute. Flashlight on the loop and the last foot of cable, look for stain, swell, and broken strands, and wipe the winter’s grit off the bracket while you’re there. Fall works too, before the season starts, but spring catches the damage while the repair can be scheduled instead of forced.

If the loops pass in May, the cables will almost certainly carry you to next May. If they don’t pass, you’ve bought yourself the easy version of this repair: a planned visit, $90 to $220 for the pair installed, often bundled with spring or roller work in the same trip. The unplanned version is a snapped cable on a February morning, a door hanging crooked with rollers out of the rail, and a same-week emergency slot.

Why both cables, when only one looks bad

The two cables went in together and have sat in the same puddles for the same winters. When one loop shows stage-three rust, its partner is a season behind at most - and the fresh cable on one side would put uneven wear on the old one anyway, since the pair shares every lift. Replacing them together is how you avoid paying the trip charge twice in eighteen months.

Same-visit logic applies up the chain, too. Cables come off with the spring tension unloaded, which is most of the labor in a spring job - so if your springs are within a year or two of their cycle life, the honest quote covers doing both while the winding bars are already out. What to say when you call

Three details get you an accurate phone estimate: what you saw at the loop (stain, swell, or broken strands), which side, and whether the door is moving normally or already running loud or crooked. A photo of the bottom bracket does even better - rust stages read clearly in a picture, and it’s the difference between “sometime this month” and “don’t use the door until we get there.”
